DIVORCE

In 2023, Slaton went through a very public split from her husband Michael Halterman.

The former couple eloped back in 2017 before having a wedding in 2019, which was previously documented on the TLC show. They are parents to sonsGage Deon, 3, andGlenn Allen, 2.

“I am very overwhelmed, stressed-out, and Michael ain’t doing s—,” she said. “Every aspect of my life is chaotic because I have no support.”

In March 2023, Haltermanfiled for divorcefrom Slaton after six years of marriage. He also requested “a civil restraining order” requiring them to stay 500 ft. from one another.

“There was no support. There was no love. There was no kindness. There was just mental abuse,” Slaton told PEOPLE, noting that it took time for her to open up about the marital problems she was facing. “I just got tired of hiding it from people.”

MENTAL HEALTH

“And it wasn’t just affecting me, it was affecting Gage and Glenn,” she said. “So it was just rough.”

Slaton finally realized how serious her mental health issues were after a massive blow-up between herself and her sisters Amanda andTammyduring a trip to Florida last summer. “That’s not the person I am,” she said of the confrontation, which was featured in the TLC reality show’s fifth season. “That is not the person I want to be.”

That fight prompted Slaton to seek help. “I’ve said I’m not a therapy person — I said, ‘I will never go to therapy,'” she said. “But I went to therapy. And I’m happier.”

She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression and acute stress disorder, “which is like PTSD from the whole stuff going on with Michael,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s a relief to know that I’m not crazy. It was something totally different. I’m not just snapping because I’m snapping. I’m snapping because I’m bipolar.”

Slaton has since continued therapy and medication for her conditions.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Because of her mental health problems, Slaton admitted last year that she’s put her weight loss journey on hold. “You can’t have weight loss without mental health,” she said.

Slaton’s highest weight was 406 lbs. Shequalified for bariatric surgeryin 2019 and is now 230 lbs. Throughout her journey, the reality star — who has diabetes — also previously struggled with pregnancy because of her weight.

After undergoing weight loss surgery, Slaton was not supposed to get pregnant for at least two years out of concern that she could regain the weight or harm her body. But just four months laterthe1000-Lb. Sistersstarfound out that she was expecting, to her surprise.

Slaton struggled with managing her diet after welcoming both of her sons, leading to a harsh but honest conversation with her siblings about reversing the results of her surgery.

In December 2023, Slaton told PEOPLE that she’s committed to being healthy enough to be around for her kids, as well as prioritizing raising her boys in a healthier environment than she had as a child.

“I try to be there for them as much as possible,” she said.
