TheOne Directionsingerdied on Oct. 16at 31 after falling several stories from a hotel room balcony in Argentina. Hisfamily mourned their lossin a statement to several outlets, includingBBC, sharing that they were “heartbroken” following his sudden death.

“Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul,” they wrote.

Liam was born on Aug. 29, 1993, in Wolverhampton, England, as the youngest of three siblings, including his sisters Nicola and Ruth. When he was 16, Liam auditioned forThe X Factorand was placed in a boy band with fellow membersHarry Styles,Niall Horan,Louis TomlinsonandZayn Malik.

During their meteoric rise, Liam had the support of his parents, who also appeared alongside him in the 2013 documentaryOne Direction: This Is Us.

“We miss him. He left home my little boy and became the boy in a magazine,” Karen said in the movie as she bought a cardboard cutout of his son at one of his concerts. “If I have this I can still see him every day. When I see him on stage I absolutely burst with pride, but we do miss him so much.”

Karen worked as a nurse, while Geoff was a fitter

While Liam was growing up in Wolverhampton, Karen worked as a nursery nurse, and Geoff was a fitter, someone who puts together or installs machinery. Liam admitted that while he didn’t “have much” growing up, his childhood was “great,” he toldThe Telegraphin 2017.

“Dad was in debt, but they did the best they could,” he said. “It makes you dream a bit, you know?”

They welcomed three children together

Liam is the youngest of three children with two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth. Though his sisters have mainly stayed out of the public eye, they were seen on numerous occasions attending Liam’s shows, and were supportive of One Direction evenafter the band split in 2016.

Now, both of Liam’s sisters are mothers. Ruth married her husband in 2016 and welcomed their son, Ashton, in October 2017, shortly after the birth of Liam’s son,Bear, in March 2017. Meanwhile, Nicola welcomed her daughter, Ffion, in June 2020 with her partner, Nick Farnell.

Karen and Geoff supported Liam as he was trying to break into the music industry

Liamfirst auditioned forThe X Factorwhen he was 14 years old, thanks to Geoff’s encouragement.

“My childhood was good, but there wasn’t a lot of money,” he told U.K. newspaperThe Timesin 2019. “I was 14 when I first appeared onThe X Factor. It was my dad who was the driving force behind that. I entered the show for him.”

However, Liam was eliminated after the Judge’s House round in the competition, with judgeSimon Cowelltelling him to return again in the future.

“I sobbed. He wanted it so much, and I was there in Barbados with him," Karen told theDaily Recordin August 2012. “He was devastated after the first X Factor exit, but I knew he’d be famous one day.”

In the two years before he auditioned again in season 7, Liam’s family supported his aspirations, with the singer sharing onThe Morningin December 2019 that Geoff helped him create CDs to help promote his music.

They were vocal about missing Liam as his fame skyrocketed

After Cowell brought the five boys together on the show, their success took off overnight. Liam shared onThe Morningthat his dad jokingly told him not to come home before Christmas asThe X Factorwrapped up then, and he was rooting for his son to make it to the end. Liam ultimately never came home at all.

In 2013’sThis Is Usdocumentary, Karen reflected on how hard it was to let go of her son as just a teenager and accept his fame.

“I shed tears just looking at him. They become someone in a newspaper or a magazine to you,” she said. “I always believed Liam would make it, but never this big. Never in my wildest dreams. He goes away for so long.”

Geoff added that he mourned missing “rites of passage” with his son like buying him his first beer or seeing him finish school.

“It’s not just the mums, it’s the dads that struggle, too. I mean, I can’t offer him much, I could take him out for a drink or play some pool,” he said. “But he’s the only lad in the family and I’ll never get this time back, he’s gone. And I can’t give him advice because he has seen more of the world than me.”

Liam credited his parents for raising him “right”

Despite his fame, Liam always stayed close to his parents, crediting them for his solid upbringing, especially as he became a father himself.

In June 2020, Liam wished his dad a happy Father’s Day, sharing that Geoff’s influence made him who he is today.

“Happy Father’s Day Dad! And to all the Dads out there and those that are no longer here,” he wrote onFacebook. “This day means even more to me now in the last few years than ever before. I truly appreciate everything you have ever done for me thank you for raising me right.”

Liam’s family was “heartbroken” after his death

The employee presumed that the guest was “under the influence of alcohol and drugs” and was asking “for someone to come urgently” as he thought the guest’s life was “in danger” because he was “in a room with a balcony.”

Liam’s family released a statement the following day, stating that they were “heartbroken” over the loss.

“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”

Days after Liam’s death,Geoff traveled to Argentinato retrieve his son’s belongings from the hotel and organize his repatriation to the UK, perBBC. He stopped to thank fans who had set up a memorial to the singer outside of the CasaSur, some of whom attempted to create a barrier between Geoff and the press to give him more privacy, according to Argentine news channelTN.
