Andy Roddick Calls Ex Mandy Moore a '10-Out-of-10 Human': 'Couldn't Have More Respect' (Exclusive)

Andy Roddickis singing the praises of his ex-girlfriend,Mandy Moore, 20 years after their split.

The former tennis player, 42, looked back on his life in 2004 with PEOPLE, when he was named one ofTeen People’s Sexiest Guys Ever. Entering the year, Roddick was ranked No. 1 in men’s tennis and had won his first Grand Slam at the 2003 US Open. He was also dating Moore, now 40, after they had met on the set of her film,How to Deal.

Although the pair called it quits in March 2004, there’s no bad blood between them. “I couldn’t have more respect for her,” Roddick tells PEOPLE now. “We were certainly young, with our whole lives ahead of us, but she’s someone who I am thankful for.”

Roddick says he has “always appreciated” Moore and continues cheering for her happiness. He adds that his wife of 15 years,Brooklyn Decker, exchanges messages with Moore more often than him.

Although the two exes aren’t in contact as much, theTangledstar has recorded videos for the Andy Roddick Foundation when asked.

“I think she’s a 10-out-of-10 human,” the retired athlete says of the singer.

AfterGQpublished its profile on Roddick for the 20th anniversary of his US Open win in August 2023, Moore showed support for her ex-boyfriend, calling him a“formative part”of her young adult life in a sweet message posted to social media.

Today, Roddick is happily married to Decker, 37, and the couple share two children: Hank, 9, and Stevie, 6. The marriage has been“the joy of a lifetime,”according to the Grand Slam champion.

“I’m thankful that I somehow, in a moment of weakness, convinced her to choose me on a day,” Roddick jokes to PEOPLE. “And we’ve certainly committed to it ever since.”

Moore has also found love with Dawes frontmanTaylor Goldsmith, whom she met after posting about the rock band’s album onInstagram. The couple became engaged in 2017 and wed the following year. They havethree childrentogether: August, 3, Oscar, 2, and Louise, whom the pair welcomed in September 2024.
