Barbiewas a big-screen smash— but now you canbinge it from the comfort of your couch!
The film was first announced in 2016, with Amy Schumer originally attached to star, however, after a few switchups with the creative team, the movie took on a whole new form, and audiences loved Gerwig’s subversive but sweet take on the doll’s journey out of Barbieland (and back).
“We invent things like dolls to explain to ourselves what it means to be human… Part of me wondered if there was a way that we could allow the doll to also have that humanity,”Gerwig teased to PEOPLE about the film. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Queen of Plastic was given something real?"

On Dec. 15, Barbie became available to stream exclusively on Max.
During a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call in August, CEO David Zaslav seemingly explained his thinking behind its streaming release date. “We really believe in the motion picture window. Let this movie go to the motion picture window, play it up, build up that brand, then have it go into PVOD,“Zaslav said, per The Wrap.
“Take it through these windows of economics that have worked forever, and we think work extremely well,” he continued. “And then put it on Max. And when it goes on Max, we think it’ll have a very good impact and that’ll be in the fall.”
There’s also an American Sign Language version ofBarbieavailable on Max. The ASL version of the film featuresinterpreter Leila Hanaumion the corner of the screen as she signs the dialogue.
