Chappell Roan Clarifies She's Voting for Kamala Harris After Facing Backlash over Not Endorsing a Candidate

Saying her recent interview withThe Guardianwas “completely taken out of context,”Chappell Roanreleased two statements explaining that she is voting forKamala Harrisin the 2024 presidential election — but will not publicly endorse her.

In the first of twoTikToks, which she shared Tuesday, Sept. 24, the rising star restated the originalGuardianquote detailing her “issues” with the government, and apologized to those who “fell for the clickbait.”

“I have encouraged people to use critical thinking skills, learn about what they’re voting for, learn about who they’re voting for, and ask questions, and it’s being completely taken out of context, per usual,” Roan, 26, began.

“There is nuance to what I say in interviews, and I think it’s important that people use critical thinking,” she said. “I think it’s important for me to question authority and question world leaders, and question myself, question my algorithm, question if some person that tweeted something about someone else is even true.”

It is important to question these things, she said, “because that’s how I think we move forward.”

“This is my third election in voting, and the world is changing so rapidly, and I want to be part of the generation that changes things for good,” the “Casual” artist said. “Because we need it.”

“I have so many issues with our government in every way,” she told the outlet. “There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone. There’s problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote — vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city.”

She also toldThe Guardianthat the No. 1 change she wants to see this election year is “trans rights,” adding, “They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.”

So, the singer continued in the TikTok, “No, I’m not voting for Trump, and yes, I will always question those in power and those making decisions over other people. And I will stand up for what’s right and what I believe in.”

“I’m sorry that you fell for the clickbait," she finished.

After she “woke up to people skewing [her statement] even more,” Roan posted a follow-upTikTokon Wednesday, Sept. 25 — in which she explicitly stated that she will be voting for Harris this November.

“Endorsing and voting are completely different,” the musician began. “I don’t agree with a lot of what is going on with policies. Obviously, f— the policies of the right, but also, f— some of the policies of the left — that’s why I can’t endorse.”

“That’s why I can’t put my entire name and my entire project behind one,” she added.

In the follow-up, the “Good Luck, Babe!” performer also said that, at least in the 2024 presidential election, she is “going to settle for the options that are in front of me — and you’re not going to make me feel bad for that.”

“Vote for who, in your mind, is the best option for what we have right now, because it’s all we can do," she said.
