After making her way back inside her home following the incident, the woman alerted her husband and was taken to a hospital in Pueblo with a puncture wound to her left leg and significant bruising on the right leg, authorities said.

The buck, who was described as having two spikes on each antler, was later seen sparring with another young buck in the yard, which is common behavior during mating season, per officials.

CPW suspects that someone may have been feeding the deer, which would cause the animal to lose its fear of people. A wildlife officer observed a bird feeder in the woman’s yard, and the victim told the agency that “she feeds birds and had thrown out bread” earlier in the day.

“I believe this is a good example of what happens when deer lose their natural fear of humans,”  Mike Brown, CPW area wildlife manager in the region, said in the news release. “They become aggressive and dangerous. This is a good reminder that wild animals should always be treated as such and that people need to give wildlife the space they need."

He added, “We’re glad this woman wasn’t more seriously injured.”
