Did U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Snub Prince Harry in His Christmas Video?

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Christmas video may have been misinterpreted.

On Monday, Sunak shared a joke video on social media showing him in the rare situation of being alone at 10 Downing Street, the official residence and office of the U.K.’s prime minister. Taking advantage of the situation, he cuddles Larry the cat, plays a game knocking over soda cans in a hallway, watchesElfand toasts marshmallows. But then the phone rings.

“Uh, No. 10 press office,” Sunak said hesitantly as he answered the call. He then raised his eyebrows and said, “Harry, you’ve got the wrong number,” before hanging up.

Some social media users believed he was referring toPrince Harry, who stepped back from his role as a working member of the royal family and moved to California with his wife,Meghan Markle, in 2020.

However, it’s unlikely that Sunak was trying to troll the Duke of Sussex. Instead, most believe Sunak was referencing Harry Cole, a British journalist who wrote about the prime minister’s personal phone number being leaked. (Given that Sunak has a weekly meeting withKing Charles, it’s doubtful that he would want to make such a joke.)

Meghan, 42, and Prince Harry, 39, spent Christmas privately, having marked the holiday with the royal family in2017and 2018.

The 2017 holiday outing was a surprise as it took place just a month after the couple announced their engagement, but in years past, significant others didn’t join the royal celebrations until after their weddings.

In the Netflix docuseriesHarry & Meghan, released last year, the Duchess of Sussexrecounted her first Christmaswith the royal family.

“I remember so vividly the first Christmas at Sandringham,” Meghan said. “Calling my mom, and she’s like, ‘How’s it going?’ And I said, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s amazing.’ "

“It’s just like a big family like I always wanted,” she added. “And there was just this constant movement and energy and fun.”

At dinner, Meghan sat next to “H’s grandfather,“Prince Philip.

“And I just thought it was so wonderful. And I was like, ‘Oh, we chatted, and it was so great. And I talked about this and talked about this,’ " she recalled, although she said that Prince Harry later informed her that she “had his bad ear,” meaning Prince Philip likely couldn’t hear parts of their conversation.

Meghan said, “I was like, ‘Oh, well, I thought it went really well.’ "
