Duffy Returns to Social Media 4 Years After Detailing Rape and Kidnapping

Duffyis sending “lots of love” to fans after her four-year social media hiatus.

The “Mercy” singer (née Aimee Duffy) shared a newInstagramvideo Monday, four years after she publicly revealed she wasthe victim of a rape and kidnapping.

The 39-year-old musician posted an inspirational video fromthe philosphart account, which shares a message about the pursuit of happiness.

“You’re going to realize that happiness was never about your job or your degree or being in a relationship,” began the video voiceover.

“Happiness was never about following in the footsteps of all of those who came before you. It was never about being like the others. One day, you’re going to see it. That happiness was always about the discovery, the hope, the listening to your heart and following it wherever it chose to go,” continued the clip.

“Happiness was always about being kinder to yourself. It was always about embracing the person you were becoming. One day you will understand that happiness was always about learning how to live with yourself, that your happiness was never in the hands of others.

“One day you will realize that true happiness comes from within, and no external factors can define it,” the voiceover added. “It was always about you. It was always about you.”

The singer simply captioned the post, “A little something to motivate the heart. Hope you are all doing well. Lots of love, Duffy.”

Fans of the artist flooded her comment section with an outpouring of love and support for her.

“We miss you, Duffy. And we love you. Hope you are doing okay. Remember people love you here. ♥️,” another added.

InFebruary 2020, the Welsh singer shared a since-deleted Instagram post that detailed why she took a 10-year break from music. She revealed that she was previously drugged, raped, kidnapped, and taken hostage in a foreign country.

“Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why,” wrote the Grammy-winning singer. “The truth is, and please trust me I am OK and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days.”

She expressed that “the recovery took time,” adding, “There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”

The singer then shared apersonal essayinApril 2020, in which she provided harrowing details of the incidents that occurred during her birthday celebration.

Duffy revealed that she considered running away but feared for her life. “I do not know how I had the strength to endure those days,” she wrote.

Duffy released her first albumRockferryin 2008, which won the 2009 Grammy Award for best pop vocal album, and scored an international hit single with “Mercy.” After releasing her second album in 2010, she took a hiatus from music the following year. She made a brief return in 2015, when she recorded three songs for theTom HardymovieLegend, in which she also had a supporting role.

In March 2020, she released a song called “Something Beautiful.” In June 2020, she published “River in the Sky,” her most recent Instagram post before Monday.
