Was Jimmy Kimmel’sPoor Thingsjoke in poor taste?
As in Academy Awards past, each Best Picture-nominated film gets a montage during the ceremony. After the clip forPoor Thingsplayed, host Jimmy Kimmel made a joke that didn’t appear to sit well with starEmma Stone.
Stone, 35, turned to her husband Dave McCary, rolled her eyes as she shook her head slightlyand muttered a few words. Many viewers online thought she said “Oh my god.”
Representatives for Stone did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
“[The sex] is obviously a huge part of her experience and her growth, as it is, I think, for most people in life,” Stone toldBBC Radio 4’sFront Rowback in January of her character’s journey. “So for the camera to sort of shy away from that, or to say like, ‘Okay, well, we’ll just cut all of this out because our society functions in a particular way’ … it felt like a lack of being honest about who Bella is.”

During September’s New York Film Festival, director Yorgos Lanthimos explained why he didn’t “shy away” from thefilm’s sexual content.
“It was a very important part of her journey. We felt that we shouldn’t shy away from it,” he said. “It would feel very disingenuous to tell this story about this character who is so free and so open, and then be prude about the sexual aspect of it.”
Poor Thingsended up a big winneron Sunday night, with Stone winning Best Actress, and the film picking up addition Academy Awards for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
