Ind. Teacher Found Dead in School Stairwell Hours After He Called Family for a Ride — and Never Showed Up

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force was called out to the scene to investigate, but police said there’s no reason to believe foul play was involved.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Jones contacted his family yesterday and advised them that he was working late at the school,” the department said. Jones called his family for a ride home around 10:30 p.m. local time.
His death remains under investigation and police said no other information has been released at this time.

Jessica Beasley, executive director and superintendent of Northwest Indiana Lighthouse Charter Schools,announced Jones' death in a statementreleased on Monday.
“It is with profound sadness that we share and acknowledge the untimely passing of Mr. Craig Jones, Special Education Teacher and basketball coach for our East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School,” Beasley said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and the entire Northwest Indiana school community as they grieve this loss.”

“Mr. Jones was an amazing spirit and valued team member that was committed to the work of helping scholars both in and out of the classroom,” the statement read. “His contagious tone of positivity and laughter was infectious if ever you had a chance to meet him.”
Beasley went on to share that Jones' influence spread to the basketball court, “where he mentored and supported our scholars beyond just academics which is the mission of who we are as a community.”
“We are forever grateful for the time we had with him and will miss him greatly,” the statement said.
Grief and support counselors are available for all staff and scholars in need of support, Beasley said.
