Kacey Musgraves Talks Being a 'Private Person' and Drawing Inspiration from NYC as She Announces New AlbumDeeper Well

The country star, 35, joinedZane Loweon Apple Music 1 to discuss how her upcoming album,Deeper Well,provokes vulnerability and connection between her and her listeners. The seven-time Grammy winner dropped the first single, “Deeper Well,” of her sixth studio album on Thursday, and fans can expect the entire project on March 15.

“I really do believe in the biggest, most powerful form of connection is vulnerability,” began the Grammy winner. “So it’s like on one hand, I think there’s hardly ever any mystery left in life, especially with artists. But at the same time, we’re here to connect.”

She explained that artists and audiences “all experience the same emotions.” Musgraves revealed that she wants to “f—king put it out there” and not “hold back.” However, she revealed to Lowe, that being vulnerable “can be scary” because she is “kind of a private person.”

“I really enjoy and revere my privacy and having something just for me and my personal life. I’m really kind of a homebody,” confessed the singer.

“And as you get ready to release a project, this tsunami of madness is coming to work me. And you’re going to be very public-facing again,” she revealed. “And that can be — that’s kind of hard for me sometimes.”

As for how Musgraves channeled these vulnerabilities, she explained that spending time in New York City helped her focus on inner creativity.

“When the outer canvas is so maximalistic, I think it’s easier to go to a minimalistic place in your mind versus I think you could make a different record if you were stay on a really desert, in a desert somewhere where there’s no one and there’s nothing going on,” she posited to Lowe.

TheGolden Hoursinger explained that although she lives in Nashville, she “felt this pull to go to New York to create there.” She shared that she could “tap into all this space, this good negative space.”

Musgraves took Lowe through her typical day in the Big Apple, noting that every day she would walk to Electric Lady Studios — which once wasJimi Hendrix’s former apartment. “[I would] walk through Washington Square Park, and it smells like weed and piss and pizza. There’s people talking, there’s musicians over here, and there’s skateboarders and there’s reggae blasting, and it’s just like it’s on 10,” described the songwriter.

“And then you get to the studio and I think you take a little bit of these things with you,” continued Musgraves. “It’s like osmosis.”
