The Silt Police Department in northwest Colorado confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday that it had launched an investigation after Jayson claimed he was a victim of domestic violence, alleging that Lauren, 37, “punched” him in the face multiple times at a restaurant over the weekend.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” Silk Police Chief Mike Kite said at the time. “Law enforcement did respond to the Miner’s Claim [a restaurant located in Silt] on Saturday, for an incident involving Lauren and her ex-husband.”

Kite added: “Right now, we’re waiting to interview some additional witnesses and checking on some additional security footage.”

Lauren, in a statement shared with PEOPLE, called the incident “a sad situation for all,” saying, “I didn’t punch Jayson in the face and no one was arrested. I will be consulting with my lawyer about the false claims he made against me and evaluate all of my legal options.”

Lauren filed for divorce from Jayson last spring, citing irreconcilable differences.

“I am grateful for our years of marriage together and for our beautiful children, all of whom deserve privacy and love as we work through this process,” the congresswoman said in a statement at the time. “I’ve always been faithful in my marriage, and I believe strongly in marriage, which makes this announcement that much more difficult.”

“I tried to hand him the documents, but [he] did not take them,” the process server alleged. “He started yelling and using profanities, and told me that I was trespassing, and that he was calling the Sheriff’s Office. I told him I was leaving the documents on the chair outside of the door, he closed the door then let the dogs out.”

The Boeberts married in 2006 and share four sons.
