The New York City Police Department (NYPD) shared in a release with PEOPLE that the body part was discovered on the northbound No. 4 subway line between the 167th and 170th Street stations in the Concourse neighborhood of the Bronx at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Police said the leg was found “along the roadbed” and “removed” pending an investigation. The appendageis now in the hands of the medical examiner, who will work to identify the owner of the body part, according toWNBC.
The NYPD did not provide any other details about how the leg may have ended up on the tracks or what may have happened to the person the leg belongs to.

The gruesome discovery comes a few months after a slew of deadly incidents on the New York City subway. Earlier this month,one person was killedand five others were injured after a shooting at the Mount Eden subway station at the intersection of Mount Eden and Jerome Avenues in the Bronx.

After police arrived on the scene, they found a 35-year-old man dead, along with a 28-year-old male who was shot in the right arm and a 15-year-old male who was shot in the ear and the thigh. A 29-year-old female was shot in the face and neck and a 14-year-old girl was shot in the foot.
This incident prompted NYC Transit President Richard Davey to issue a statement reiterating their public information campaign to “Ride Inside, Stay Alive.”
