“I think, I was told — maybe you know differently — that I was the first person to ever be able to step foot in that water. Very, very dirty water. Don’t do it. Don’t try this at home,” she said with a laugh.

“Yeah, there were some Coke cans at the bottom,” added Wright.

Forrest Gump, which marks its 30th anniversary this year, won six Oscars, including Best Picture. The cast also included Gary Sinise and Sally Field.

In a 2021 interview with TheDaily Beast, Wright echoed that the Reflecting Pool’s water was memorably dirty.

“Yep! And they said at the time that no one has everbeen allowed to do such a thing. They would never allow it, and I don’t know why they complied and I got to get in that dirty water,” she said.

“We giggled a lot, we did,” she told DC Film Girl of working with the cast. “It was in Portugal in summer — it was so hot. We were dying. So most of the time between takes we were just fanning ourselves in the corner of the cathedral.”
