After signing a deal with Columbia Records in 2015, he provided co-written songs “I Wanna Love You” and “You’re So Beautiful” to the show’s season 1 soundtrack. In 2018, he released his debut album,Sum of My Music.Smollett made headlines in 2019 whenhe lied to the police about being the victim of a hate crime. The actor claimed he had beenphysically attacked and called racial and homophobic slurs, but an investigation revealed thathe had paid two brothersto fabricate the assault. Smollett underwent trial twice, and in 2022,he was sentenced to 150 days in county jail and two and a half years on probation.
