“The whole point of doing what I do was because it was so much fun to do when I first started. I kind of lost that after a while. Freddy got me to find the joy in it again,” said Joel. He reflected on the writing process during an interview on theGRAMMY Live! from the Red Carpetshow.

“I’m going to go into my caveand become a caveman. It’s not a fun process for me — it’s very self-centered, very lonely. And sometimes it’s torture. But afterwards, I love having written,” he said.

Joel is set to end his record-breaking Madison Square Garden residency on July 25. It will markhis 150th performance at the venue.

“After 10 years, we’ve done it.I mean, I didn’t realize it would last 10 years. And I don’t know how many shows it is, I’m sure somebody’s keeping track of it somewhere, but I’m amazed that we went this far, and I’m honored,” he told PEOPLE of the milestone in November 2023.
